The Hawthorn

 




 

Then, as now, the hawthorn was a staple of Victorian hedgerows, while a double-flowering variety (pictured) was popular in Victorian gardens as a tree. The Glastonbury thorn was the most widely planted garden hawthorn by the late Victorian age.
