Work to be done in the Kitchen, Orchard and Fruit Gardens
These monthly directions come from Duncan MacDonald's
"The New London Family Cook", J Robins, London, first edition c. 1800


The Kitchen Garden

Give air to cauliflowers and lettuces under glasses and in frames

Take up carrots, parsnips and beets

Preserve scorzonera, salsafy, and Hamburgh parsley in sand

prepare hotbed for forcing asparagus

Dress artichokes

Plant endive on ridges, and tie some up for blanching

Earth up celery

Earth up broccoli, savoys, borecole and cabbages

Cut down the stalks of autumn asparagus

Cut down stalks of beans sown in September

Sow small salading

Finish cleaning seeds

The Orchard and Fruit Garden

Finish pruning espaliers and standard fruit trees

Pull off the autumnal figs

Finish gooseberries and currants

Finish planting fruit trees

Gather late fruit

Examine the pears etc in the fruitery

Place the Alpine strawberries in pots under a frame.
